Old Lady Game

We read a funny story called There Was and Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover.  In this story the lady eats many strange things.  The kids recreated the story using story pieces and a play mat.

With a binder between each set of partners, one student would give a direction to his or her partner.  They would then have to place that character on their own mat where they felt it belonged.  An example, "Put the leprechaun under the sun" or "Place the clover to the right of the leprechaun."  After several items had been placed on the mats, the binders were removed.  The partners compared their mats to see if they were the same.

The first time the students played the mats were very different when revealed.  As they played several games, their directions became more specific and detailed.  It was amazing to watch how quickly they realized how important it was to use very clear directions.
